DI Cool Stuff BarA WEEK WHERE NOBODY LEARNED ANY LESSONS!!! ~ Welp- it was an exciting week in “STORIES THAT FLOODED MY FACEBOOK FEED WITH UNASKED FOR OPINIONS.” It started with Megyn Kelly saying that “Santa… is white.” Kelly said this during a discussion over an article that was published at Slate entitled Santa Claus Should Not Be A White Man Anymore. The ensuing shitstorm was epic. A million articles were written about why Megyn Kelly’s remarks were awful. The lesson everyone SHOULD have learned was: NEVER EVER ENGAGE ANYONE AT SLATE!! They LIVE for that, you guys! When FoxNews contacted them to do a segment, I imagine everyone at Slate experienced a collective orgasm. Technically, I agree with Slate on most issues and I STILL always leave the site in a spluttering rage. Slate writes articles with the sole purpose of upsetting you (why else would they have AN ENTIRE TAG entitled “YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG!? Really, Slate? I’m doing grilled cheese wrong? I DOUBT IT, you arrogant assholes.). [ThinkProgress]

GEORGE ZIMMERMAN IS COMING FOR YOU!~ Following in George W. Bush’s footsteps, George Zimmerman has turned to art therapy to quiet the demons in his life. Zimmerman recently put a painting he did on Ebay in hopes that the sale would help him combat his financial woes (i.e. MASSIVE COURT COSTS). In the description of the painting, Zimmerman says, “My art work allows me to reflect, providing a therapeutic outlet and allows me to remain indoors 🙂.” The smiley emoticon at the end isn’t me editorializing- that’s Zimmerman being all cute and jokesy (it’s hilarious because he gets in SUCH PREDICAMENTS when he leaves his house!). Zimmerman isn’t going to remain indoors forever though. The person who has the winning bid on Ebay gets a DOUBLE treat because Zimmerman has promised to deliver the painting to their door. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?   [NY MAG]

BROOKLYN IS NAMED LESBIAN CAPITAL OF THE NORTHEAST~ Marty Markowitz declared Brooklyn, NY “The Lesbian Capital of the Northeast!” Marty Markowitz (I CAN ONLY SAY HIS FULL NAME) is the Borough President of Brooklyn… which I didn’t know was a thing. It should be noted that this statement was issued with pride (no pun intended). Marty Markowitz believes that lesbians have, “made unbelievable contributions to the quality of life in our city and our borough” (awwww). Brooklyn beat out Amherst, Northampton, Manhattan, and Provincetown– and from what I can determine– NO ONE HAS TRIED TO CORRECT HIM! Who knew Borough President carried such authority?! WHY STOP THERE, MARTY MARKOWITZ? How about lesbian capital of THE UNITED STATES! THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE! THE WORLD!!! [Gothamist]

DI Cool Stuff BarHELLO! Usually “Cool Stuff” is one or two (or THREE if I’m feeling super ambitious) interesting stories that I write and comment on. There were several stories I posted earlier this week that basically fall under this category. They are awesome stories about heroic Canadians, badass scientists, aaaaand terrifying arctic monsters. Yeesh. You know what is terrible for writing? Not writing.

(In this case, the “not writing” is a result from having a job that feeds on your life energy until you are convinced your office is swarming with dementors.)

Needless to say, I have been WAY out of the loop. From what I can gather, the government has shut down, Malcom’s Dad now deals meth, and judging from the sheer amount of links, I can only assume Miley Cyrus has killed someone.

Anyway- what’s been helping me chug-a-lug through it has been friends (who still talk to me even when I’m tired and cranky), pizza, and awesome stuff on the internet.

DI Cool Stuff BarJIM HENSON IS PART OF MY RELIGION ~ Jim Henson’s birthday was September 24th and he would have been 77 this year. Despite having died, every year more and more of his creations appear: sketches, old un-aired footage, journal entires. The man was always making thing and always trying to make things better. He is my Hero.

  • Henson’s life wasn’t just a linear path to success. Before The Muppets, Jim Henson tried his hand at a great deal of different creative pursuits. The only persistent theme in his life was to experiment and create. Luke Epplin takes a look at Henson’s earlier careers before Sesame Street.

With varying degrees of success, he tried his hand at documentaries, experimental films, animation, acting, music, corporate promotional videos, and even nightclub ownership. Jones portrays Henson during this period as a restlessly inventive artist whose career path, far from leading unswervingly to television superstardom with the Muppets, could have forked in many different directions. Even though they’re frequently overshadowed by his masterworks from subsequent decades, the wide-ranging projects that Henson developed in the ’60s highlight the nature of the particular, imaginative genius that all of his works—popular or not—shared. COOL STUFF

Get It Together, North Carolina ~ When Amendment One became part of the North Carolina constitution, it was not only incredibly sad– but super embarrassing. North Carolina is a pretty cool place. Usually South Carolina is the one doing upsetting/distressing things. All North Carolina had to do was be cool and lay low for a while and we could regain some of our dignity. So many other states had been campaigning forWorst State” award (yeah, all those are individual links to stupid fuckery happening in different states). But this week, North Carolina introduced a bill that would make Christianity the state religion. I want to stress that it was struck down— but it is still super bewildering that it got as far as it did. They also introduced a voter suppression bill: Bill 666. For a supposedly Christian state, you would think that they would pick up on the stigma a bill named “Bill 666” might have attached to it. Yeesh. [Huffington Post]

Leno And Fallon Stay Classy Through The Power of Song ~ The past two weeks have been full of rampant speculation of what will happen with The Tonight Show. The whole thing was fueled by statements/rumors NBC executives were leaking to bloggers (the execs remained anonymous– because NBC is run by adults). Shortly before an official announcement came down, though, Leno and Fallon sang a duet (a spoof of West Side Story’s “Tonight”) right in between the two shows. It was classy and touching. Even if it was completely staged, and the two have nothing but a vicious burning hatred for each other, this video proves that they are both substantial and talented performers. Jimmy will be taking over The Tonight Show in spring of 2014 (when Leno’s contract runs out). Right now, Seth Meyers seems to be the most viable candidate to take over Jimmy Fallon’s time slot. [Hulu]

Jon Stewart Defends Egyptian Comedian ~ About a week ago, the Egyptian government put out an arrest warrant for Bassem Youssef. Youssef has a show in Egypt called al-Bernameg (which literally translates to “The Show”). The show pokes fun at Egypt, its politics, and its leaders (particularly Egyptian President Morsi). Some of the jokes on the show have gotten Youssef in trouble with the government (watch Youssef poke fun at the whole ordeal here). Quartz looked through episodes of the show and translated some of the jokes that got the comedian into trouble. Humor can be subjective– but, you guys, the jokes are pretty innocuous. Jon Stewart covered the story at the top of The Daily Show. Like some of his best pieces, the most effective/damning piece is simply a clip of President Morsi pledging to never imprison Youssef. Since Stewart covered the story on his show, Egypt has responded… via Twitter (sigh), to voice it’s deep displeasure at such disrespect! I am just continually amazed at how uncomfortable serious/powerful people are unable to cope with humor.   [Hollywood Reporter]

FCC Cares About What You Think? ~ So, the organization that arbitrarily decides what is right and decent is making some changes and suddenly cares about what you think? To be fair, this uncharacteristic move is a result of a Supreme Court decision rather than a sudden desire to be more democratic/inclusive. You can comment here. [The Mary Sue]

Roger Ebert Died ~ When people die, the internet is flooded with grandiose headlines. When TODAY posted an article entitled “Why There Will Never Be Another Siskel & Ebert,” though, it was pretty accurate. All I remember is Siskel & Ebert. When Gene Siskel died, they replaced him with… someone. No idea who. Nowadays, everyone fancies themselves a film critic. Anyway, here is a collection of the best tributes to Mr. Ebert:  What Roger Ebert Knew About Writing40 Hilariously Mean Roger Ebert Reviews, and Outtakes from Siskel & Ebert (they are so adorably crotchety!).

TRAILERS AND TV/MOVIE NEWS

HBO is doing a Nora Ephron documentary. Hooray! [The Hollywood Reporter]

Nasim Pedrad was cast in John Mulaney’s sitcom. In equally exciting news, John Mulaney is writing a sitcom! Both are currently on SNL, but will leave the show if the sitcom is picked up in the fall. [Splitsider]

The Axe Cop trailer debuted at WonderCon. It’s about a cop who doles out justice with an ax. Axe Cop is the creation of 5 year old Malachi Nicholl. Initially, the series existed in comic book form (with Malachi’s older brother Ethan illustrating whatever insane storyline his younger brother thought up). Now, it is going to be a animated show on FOX. [The Mary Sue]

Steve Carell and James Gandolfini will be dueling paleontologists in Big Bones. I would comment on its hilariously outlandish premise- but it’s based on a true story. [Deadline]

Stars: They’re Just Like Us… when the apocalypse comesThis Is The End trailer features a smorgasbord of celebrities (as themselves) partying at James Franco’s house when suddenly the alien apocalypse happens. The highlight for me was a quick cameo by Emma Watson. Remember the joy you felt when Hermione sucker-punched Draco? Relive that joy when she busts into James Franco’s house and attacks Seth Rogen.
